Well I'm finally going back on the Ambulance!

After being on light duty for 6 months they are finally letting be go back on an ambulance. Completed all my "re-orientation stuff"...and now back to # 18 ambulance on regular 4 on 4 off shift. Not sure how a 14 hour nite shift is going to affect me after sleeping in my own bed for 6 months. I get physio until the 9th of June...then...that's it I guess. My finger is still very stiff and sore especially in the morning. It takes me a couple of hours of pushing on it etc to get it to work. But it is slowly improving. I'm using something called a "Power web" to strengthen my grip. It is a circle of plastic webbing that comes in various strengthes, and you squeeze it various ways to increase your grip strength. My guage is...can I get a comfortable C chord on the guitar. It is coming but not there yet.

ACP AGM

I attended the annual general meeting of the Alberta College of Paramedics this weekend. I was disappointed with the turnout. Out of over 7000 people that belong to this organization only about 184 showed up for the meeting. This means that 184 people are directing the decisions of thousands of Paramedics in this Province. What do we have to do to impress upon Paramedics that they need to show up at meetings? What ever happens regarding their future of practice in this Province is in a few hands...mostly administrators might I add! I find this extremely distressing. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!! Funny how Paramedics are our own worst enemy! If the shit hits the fan you have no one to blame but yourselves!

Latest X-ray

Pins out for sure NEXT Monday! Dr. Says healing doesn't show up on x-ray on fingers for 16 weeks, and he was concerned if the pins stay in too long the finger will be stiff!

Fit Testing

So..I have been doing "Fit Testing" this week. That is..checking the new recruits for mask fit. We use a Scott cartridge mask, for stuff like pepper spray, and tear gas...and an N95 mask for virusssses. In 34 years I have yet to break this out of it's package...but before we had them...there was a time where I could have. A truck full of paint overturned out of the City, and the guy was covered in acetone. I was pretty high by the time I got to the hospital!

Aboriginal Awareness Training

So....I took advantage of my Day shift at EMS and took a City run "Aboriginal Awareness " course. This was taught by an Adrian Goulet (No relation to Robert). It was held at #26 Stn's board room in the CPS Section. It was very interesting, they sent out a precourse quiz that got me into the internet to find the answers. (I think I was the only one that did it!). He started out with a song and a drum routine...then showed us a few artifacts, and a video about residential schools that was very powerful. His wife had baked us some bannock....and showed up later with their baby daughter. I quite enjoyed it and hope they come up with a "part 2" soon.

I felt quite privileged that I actually got paid to go as well as having the tuition paid. Hmmm...I wonder if there is more courses out there like that!?

Post pins dressing

This is what the dressing looks like, after the pins were put in. He used tube gauze and elastoplast tape. He said not to change it for a month....I can imagine how dirty this is gonna get!

It hurt more after the freezing came out than the original injury.

Pins

Ok...This was done about 10:30 am at the PLC Hospital by Dr Allan Lin. He said the freezing would last 12 hours...NOT! it is 5 pm now...and hurts like hell. He will take them out in a month...and said I would probably have a permanent tip of finger droop..I didn't want to hear that. He said it would be a good year ...with lots of physio. What a stupid thing I did!!!

Corner Gas

So...I'm watching Corner Gas....and Hank is doing a blog....and everyone pretends they are reading it. I think that is what is happening with my blog....cause I don't see any comments. Oh well....maybe someday, somebody will care....maybe when I'm dead and gone. Or when it comes time to write my memoirs when I'm about 95, if I can still see. I will use it to write my memoirs so some space alien in the future will know what I did with my life. (Hmm...Karen is pretty hot when she isn't wearing her cop uniform)

Finger No Scab today

Happy New Year...after my bath this morning the scab came off...looks a lot better. Still swollen and crooked though. I am quite a bit concerned about that.

Happy Birthday to me

Well....another year has gone by....one good thing about having a birthday at the end of the year is I always feel that a new year will bring something new. (Profound eh!)

Judy (an old friend from Belle Plaine) sent me an email wishing me a happy 39th!...ha...at one time I thought THAT was old...now I would take it in a second. When my dad was my age I was in my final year of high school. He certainly never slowed down, and worked hard every day on the farm, fixing canvas for the combine and the swather in the winter, milking cows every morning, cleaning out the barn (well I usually did that!). No barns to clean anymore....however sometimes I would prefer to do that. Glad I don't have to milk cows....tried that...Dad could milk two while I did one. (and with my now broken finger....that would be VERY difficult).

I am lucky to still have a job cause I can't afford to retire on what I would make. Everybody talks of retirement....ha...I doubt that they ever really figured out that they could never live off what a pension pays. My idea of a pension is...pay me what I am making right now...and tell me not to come to work...forever. That I could live on. Anything less...forget it. I'd be lucky to pay my utility bills. One needs to invest in real estate or something that has long term equity. A lesson I learned too late. Or better yet....win the lottery!! Yeah I know...that is NOT a proper retirement plan! Especially with MY luck!

So...I get Merry Christmas, Happy Birthday and Happy New Year ALL AT ONCE. I'm supposed to soak it all in cause that's it for the year! I can't believe how fast the years go by. Summers used to last forever when I was a kid.

My mom said..."if it wasn't for that glass of wine...you'd have been a new Years baby!"... yeah right....her idea of a glass of wine was a communion glass!
My friend Martin took me out for prime rib tonite....and Mark D. took me out for breakfast. That was nice. Thanks guys!

Boxing Day

I was surprised this morning when I got an email from my youngest daughter Lori...whom I haven't heard from in a long time. She sent me a couple of pictures of her playing her cello in a concert on Dec 1.

Merry Christmas 2

Well...one of the Superintendants told me I was supposed to be at work on Christmas day...so I showed up. I couldn't get in with my pass card but the supt. let me in and I checked my email, and did various things until about 11 am when the Staffing Supt showed up...and asked...what I was doing there. Turns out I didn't have to be there at all. So I went home.

I called Ken Waiting and he & his wife invited me to spend Christmas with them at Ken's Parent's place in Olds. They made a great meal...and the their kids had a great time. They both got digital cameras for Christmas and were doing a good job of documenting everything in site. Jim Waiting (Ken's Dad) runs a tractor dealership in Olds...and lives on a very nice 1 acre site in Olds.

Thanks for everything...it was nice not to be alone at Christmas!
